Have you ever wanted to learn more about nature and wildlife? Or maybe you have always fancied taking up wildlife photography?
Well now is your chance! Natural England have set up an exciting and informative programme of events in and around the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve near Doncaster. And here’s the good bit, they are all free!
During the summer local experts will be leading a number of events which will teach you all need to know about the wildlife found at Humberhead Peatlands. The last event took place on Saturday 14th June, where we helped budding photographers capture stunning images of our unique natural history. It gave people a chance to get close up pictures of Hatfield’s reptiles, like grass snakes and adder.
This exciting programme of events give the public a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the nature and wildlife on their doorstep. There really is something for everyone, from a ‘Things That Chuurr In The Night’ walk to a ‘Fungi Foray’. You can even bring the family along to one of our ‘Guided Family Walks’ on Hatfield Moor.
Craig Thomas, Humberhead Peatlands Development Manager said ‘This is a wonderful programme of events which has been arranged by staff and volunteers from Natural England. It offers something for everyone to get involved in, from Red Deer expeditions to Butterfly Walks where we examine some of the 4,000 species of insects found on the site. So come along with family and friends to visit this fantastic wildlife haven, you’ll enjoy it!’.
Janet Canning, Humberhead Peatlands Community Support Officer said ‘Its all about encouraging people to get out there and enjoy the fantastic wildlife that lives right on their doorstep. Its all here at Humberhead Peatlands, so why not come along and join us this summer, we’d be happy to meet you’.

National Nature Reserves
National Nature Reserves (NNRs) are some of the very finest sites in England for wildlife and geology, and provide great opportunities for people to experience nature. They have been established to protect and manage the special wildlife habitats, species and geological features that occur there. These features are of national and often international importance, and many NNRs are important for study and research. Almost all NNRs have some form of access provision – many are fully open throughout the year. There are 222 throughout England.
