Increased green welly in the South East
On 8 May, Natural England is bringing together key environmental organisations in Guildford to decide how major environmental challenges in the region can be addressed by working together.
Amongst the organisations attending are the Environment Agency, RSPB, English Heritage, regional government, Wildlife Trusts, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnerships, and local authorities.
Alan Law, Natural England Director for the South East, says: “Over 8 million people live in the South East region and the quality of the natural environment is critical both to communities and the local economy. We want to join forces with other organisations to find ways of benefiting the natural environment in the region and making the best use of our resources.”
Board member, Merrick Denton-Thompson OBE, says, “Natural England has responsibility for protecting and enhancing biodiversity and landscapes, as well as promoting greater access and recreation – helping people to enjoy a healthier environment both in the countryside and urban environments. This big remit is best achieved by working with other organisations, and the public.“
Natural England are seeking collaboration on four strategic areas: Increasing and enhancing accessible natural greenspace; targeting support to farmers to bring the greatest benefits for wildlife; filling research gaps; and increasing public support and action.
