Project Description
Helping otters is a small-scale project, which will encourage otters to establish themselves along the course of the River Wear.
It will do this by providing five safe resting sites (holts) and 3 kilometres of dense riverside vegetation at key sections of the river.
It is hoped that a secure breeding population can be established, which will re-colonise the upper wear catchment.
Length of Project
Start date: July 2003
End date: May 2004
Project Area
The otter holt sites will be located at Chester-le-Street, Lanchester, Hamsterley, Wolsingham and Witton-le-Wear.
