Peak District Land Management Advisory Service extended

Farmers and land managers in the Peak District now have access to vital information, support and advice on their doorsteps.

Natural England, the Peak District National Park Authority, Forestry Commission and Environment Agency are working together to provide a joined-up service for them.

Minister for Biodiversity, Landscape and Rural Affairs Barry Gardiner opened a key element of the Peak District Land Management Advisory Service – a drop-in centre at the Agricultural Business Centre, in Bakewell, on January 30, 2007.

The centre brings much-needed support closer to farmers and land managers.

Advisers are on hand at the office every Monday. They will help farmers and land managers to find their way through the maze of environmental land management advice and regulation, to secure conservation agreements and to support them to enhance the environmental qualities of the Peak District.

Barry Gardiner said: “Environment-friendly farming practices are critical. This service can help farmers and land managers to contribute positively to the very special Peak District environment while supporting their livelihoods.

“It is only right that advice to farmers and other land managers from Defra and its agencies is well co-ordinated.”

The service advises on all land management schemes including; Environmental Stewardship, the England Woodland Grant Scheme, the Wildlife Enhancement Scheme for Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the Catchment Sensitive Farming Initiative and the Environmental Enhancement Scheme.

Guidance on cross compliance, farm waste, nitrate vulnerable zones, rural regeneration and diversification schemes is also available.

The drop-in centre is open on Mondays from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Advice can be obtained at other times from Natural England, the Forestry Commission and the Catchment Sensitive Farming Initiative on 01629 816640 or by email at eastmidlands@naturalengland.org.uk or from the Peak District National Park Authority at farming@peakdistrict.gov.uk or by phone on 01629 816270.
