Natural England - Land Management Advisory Service

Land Management Advisory Service

Natural England's free advisory service helps farmers and other land managers to improve their land management for the benefit of wildlife, landscape, public access and other environmental purposes.

We aim to provide a cohesive and effective service that meets the needs of land managers and helps to deliver Natural England’s strategic outcomes. We work closely with other organisations that provide advice programmes, and we ensure that our advice reflects the most recent research and ideas, and is practical and commercially realistic.

The service is provided mainly through farm events such as farm walks, workshops, clinics and farm visits. It is co-ordinated and supported by national specialists and project managers, and is largely delivered by regional staff, who are led by Natural England’s regional Project Managers for Farm Advice.

Subject areas covered

The service currently covers the following subject areas:

Cross compliance

In England, farmers claiming the Single Payment and other direct payments are responsible for understanding and meeting cross compliance requirements. We provide technical advice to support farmers, other land managers, their advisers and agricultural contractors on these requirements. This includes statutory management requirements and good agricultural and environmental conditions.

The service is available on the Cross Compliance website, which also includes details on events. This part of the service is delivered by Momenta under contract to Natural England, on behalf of Defra, the Environment Agency, Animal Health and the Rural Payments Agency.

Environmental Stewardship (ES)

This part of the service provides clear, accurate and targeted guidance to farmers, to encourage farming practices that conserve and enhance the countryside.

We offer advice on Entry Level Stewardship, Organic Entry Level Stewardship, and Higher Level Stewardship. The advice helps farmers and other land managers decide whether or not to apply and how to go about it. This includes moving into ES from expiring Countryside Stewardship and Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) agreements.

We also offer advice to those who already have ES agreements, to help them implement and achieve the best possible environmental results. This advice is delivered both by Natural England staff and through a contract with the consultancy ADAS.

Environmentally sustainable land management

We provide advice on subjects such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, public access, and forging better links with local communities. Please contact your regional Project Manager (listed below) for more information.

Conservation grazing

We provide advice about conservation grazing through the Grazing Advice Partnership (GAP), a UK-wide partnership network of practitioners and advisers from the nature conservation, agricultural and livestock sectors.

Regional contacts

All advice is co-ordinated regionally by Project Managers for Farm Advice.
