There are about 600 named trails and routes across England that provide extensive opportunities for people to walk, cycle or horse ride. We wanted to know more about who uses them, what experiences they seek and how to increase and diversify use.
We also wanted to know more about the differences between National Trails and the other routes and find smarter ways of managing and funding National Trails.
We commissioned research amongst a representative sample of users, interviewed highway authorities, spoke to guide book publishers and contacted a range of experts in England and in other countries before consulting stakeholders on the findings and recommendations.
