Holkham NNR is in Norfolk
We encourage the use of sustainable transport whenever possible.
Holkham NNR is on part of National Cycle Route 1
which goes through the NNR between Holkham village and Wells. For more information see the Sustrans website. Secure bicycle racks can be found at Wells Beach road and Lady Anne’s drive car parks. Cycle parking is also available in the nearby Holkham park, which is also on National Route 1.
The nearest train station is King's Lynn
approximately 23 miles away. There are hourly trains from London Kings Cross via Cambridge and Ely.
Bus time tables can be checked at www.travelineeastanglia.org.uk
or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233.
To Wells: from King's Lynn to Wells via Fakenham, from Norwich to Wells via Fakenham. The Wells stop is 1 mile from the NNR and the beach .
To Holkham: the Norfolk Coasthopper
runs from King's Lynn and Hunstanton to Sheringham and has stops that allow access to the NNR via Stiffkey, Wells, Holkham and Burnham Overy Staithe. At Holkham, the main bus stop is on the main road in Holkham village, next to the small post office. In the summer the service is frequent.
Why not plan your visit so you walk a section and hop on the bus back?
The core-section of Holkham National Nature Reserve is between Holkham village and Wells-next-the-Sea, north of the main A149. It’s within easy reach of Norwich on the A1067, King's Lynn on the A148 and London and Cambridge from the M11 and A10.
There are two car parks at Lady Anne's Drive, Holkham village and Wells Beach Road. Holkham Estate own and manage both fee-paying car parks.
Toilets and a cafe are available at the Wells car park. There are other car parks available within Wells and a small commercial train operates between the town, the NNR and Wells beach.
The majority of the NNR is open to the public except for the grazing marshes on both public rights of way and permissive access routes, and some tracks are suitable for wheelchairs users and buggies (see direct enquiries for details). Being Norfolk, of course, the reserve is generally flat!
A good network of paths and tracks between Wells and Burnham Overy Staithe allows access to all the best wildlife habitats.
Holkham NNR is also featured on the Nationwide Access Register
.
Natural England and Holkham Estate permit horse riding on the beach. Details including restrictions and maps can be found in the horse riders' information leaflet: (366kb)
