Recreation

Natural England is committed to increasing the number, diversity and frequency of people who enjoy the natural environment.

Natural England works to provide quality places to enjoy the outdoors and opportunities for everyone to participate in outdoor recreation activities.

This work includes the Diversity Review and Action Plan, which is investigating why some people are not able to enjoy the countryside and is exploring how all sectors of society can have equal opportunity to enjoy our natural heritage.

Our highly successful Walking the Way to Health Initiative encourages more walking for health reasons. It aims to get more people walking in their own communities, especially those who take little exercise or live in areas of poor health.

Natural England is also responsible for the Countryside Code, designed to help us all to respect, protect and enjoy our countryside.

We are developing a health campaign to expand the role of the natural environment in supporting health and wellbeing.

Camping and Caravanning - Natural England has taken over responsibility from Defra for the issue of camping certificates and touring caravan site exemptions in England.
